Check out this short video by our Wisdom Teeth Dentist, Dr Rob. In this video, he explains what you need to know about Wisdom Teeth and why it's important to remove them when you start to feel pain.

Wisdom teeth are the last permanent teeth to erupt, usually between the age of 17 and 25.

In some lucky cases, your wisdom teeth can erupt normally without any pain or problems. However, in many cases there is insufficient room in your mouth and wisdom teeth can be partially or fully impacted (stuck under the gums).

This often results in pain, infection or other dental problems, and you’ll likely need to have them removed.

Some problems associated with Impacted Wisdom teeth include:

  • Pain
  • Food and debris caught behind the tooth
  • Infection in the gums
  • Tooth decay in partially erupted teeth
  • Damage to neighbouring teeth
  • Develop a cyst (a fluid-filled sac) around the wisdom tooth
  • Complications with orthodontic treatment

Many dentists who are untrained or do not have the skills to remove wisdom teeth will refer their patients to have their wisdom teeth removed under General Anaesthetic.

This may lead to unnecessary cost and has its own risks. However, these costs can be easily avoided having them removed pain-free under local anaesthetic.

Our highly skilled dentist will assess your individual situation and discuss the most cost effective and efficient method.

We will take a full mouth x-ray (OPG) with our state-of-the-art machine. We will then explain all options and risks in detail and answer any questions you may have.

Why Should I Have Them Removed?
Since the wisdom teeth are the last to develop, they may not have enough room to adequately erupt into the mouth to become fully functional teeth. This lack of room or space can result in a number of harmful effects on your overall dental health.
What is The Best Age To Have Them Removed?
If it is recognised that you do not have enough room in your mouth for your third molars to erupt, it is advisable to have them removed as soon as it is recognised. In some patients it can be before they are 17 years of age, whereas in others it may be be 18 years or older. Younger patients generally heal faster, with more predictable final healing and have fewer complications than an older patient.
What Happens After I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Most of the time you will want to maintain a low profile for a few days. We ask that you follow your post-operative instructions closely as they will make you most comfortable during the first few days following your procedure. Most patients feel like they are over the hump in 3-5 days.
Will My Private Health Fund Cover This?
Most Health Funds will cover between $200 - $300 of your Wisdom Teeth Removal Costs
What are the risks of Wisdom Teeth removal?
There are normal things to expect after having minor surgery but there may be other risks that are less common or rare. As these are often specific to every patient, your dentist will discuss these with you at your consult.
